Insider Q&A: Artificial intelligence and cybersecurity in military tech

Josh Lospinoso’s first cybersecurity startup was acquired in 2017 by Raytheon/Forcepoint.. His second, Shift5, works with the U.S. military, rail operators and airlines including JetBlue. A 2009 West Point grad and Rhodes Scholar, the 36-year-old former Army captain spent more than a decade authoring hacking tools for the National Security Agency and U.S. Cyber Command.

Lospinoso recently told a Senate Armed Services subcommittee how artificial intelligence can help protect military operations. The CEO/programmer discussed the subject with The Associated Press as well how software vulnerabilities in weapons systems are a major threat to the U.S. military. Learn More

Building automation and artificial intelligence creates new cybersecurity threats

Cybersecurity threats are changing on a daily basis with criminals and bad actors constantly looking for vulnerabilities. Through the increased use of cloud applications, real estate managers and owners seek to enhance tenant and visitor experiences; they are, at the same time, creating new cybersecurity weaknesses. 

Building automation relies on the use of data and hard-wired connections as well as wireless networks. Multiple access control changes were rapidly implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic to make entry into buildings seamless and without guests having to touch surfaces. At the same time, there was a strong push to have tenants use cloud applications for access, rent payments and maintenance requests.  Read more

Software security tops ENISA’s list of cybersecurity threats for 2030

In March 2023, the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) published a report exploring potential cybersecurity threats for 2030. While the stated goal is to anticipate threats that could affect the “ability to keep European society and citizens digitally secure,” the findings are applicable on a global scale. 

Combining input from expert workshops with formal threat forecasting methods, the report both indicates which existing threats are most likely to stay with us and makes a foray into more speculative predictions, with “science fiction prototyping” named as one of the methods used, no less.
